Meet Our First Grant Recipients

On February 24th, 2020 a man in Kenmore, Wa walked into the Town Market with a knife and attacked the clerk who suffered life-threatening injuries. Fortunately for the clerk, Mr. Degroot, a homeless man living behind the store, heard the attack and fearlessly rushed into the building to subdue the attacker and save the clerk’s life. His heroic actions caught the attention of the local media and the Carl Haglund Foundation. Mr. Degroot and his wife became the first grant recipients of the Carl Haglund Foundation and are now living quietly in downtown Seattle where Mr. Degroot is gainfully employed and getting the treatment he needs. This is his story.
